Foras na Gaeilge
Foras na Gaeilge was established on 2 December 1999 under the terms of the
British-Irish Agreement Act, and the main objective of the Foras is to promote
the Irish language on the island of Ireland. As well as taking over the
functions of Bord na Gaeilge, a wide range of extra functions were given to the
Foras to add to its effectiveness in the promotion of the Irish language. For
example in the area of education and terminology the Foras took over the
functions of an Gúm and the functions of an Coiste Téarmaíochta. Seosamh Ó
Murchú, Senior Editor of An Gúm will manage this phase of the project on behalf of Foras na
Gaeilge.

Lexicography MasterClass (LexMC)
LexMC is a company led by Sue Atkins, Adam Kilgarriff, and Michael Rundell.
Collectively and individually, LexMC’s directors have had an unrivalled
portfolio of experience in the production of dictionaries, and an outstanding
record of innovation in the fields of lexicography and lexical computing. All
three have been closely involved in the ‘corpus revolution’ that has transformed
dictionary-making since the 1980s, and all three have played leading roles in
the planning and development of a range of groundbreaking and market-leading
dictionaries, both bilingual and monolingual. As a company, they have provided
training and consultancy services to organizations – both commercial and
academic – all over the world, and their annual ‘Lexicom’ workshop in Brighton
has attracted well over 100 participants in the past three years.

Sue Atkins
Sue Atkins has been a professional lexicographer since 1966: she was General Editor of Collins-Robert English-French Dictionaries, and later Lexicographic Adviser to Oxford University Press. She has given invited lectures and taught lexicography worldwide, and held consultancies with a number of prestigious research institutions. In 2000, Sue was awarded an honorary DLitt by the University of Brighton, UK, for services to lexicography, national and international.
Michael Rundell
Michael Rundell has been a lexicographer for almost 25 years, working mainly on dictionaries of English for language learners. He has supervised numerous dictionary projects, most recently the Macmillan English Dictionary for Advanced Learners (2002), of which he is Editor-in-Chief. He has had a leading role in the design of English corpora, including the British National Corpus, and has taught courses in corpus-based lexicography for 10 years.
Adam Kilgarriff
Adam Kilgarriff is a research scientist who has been studying language structure and the lexicon for the last 15 years, at the Universities of Sussex and Brighton and for various dictionary publishers. His interests lie in the computer processing of language and its relation to dictionaries. He has published widely on word meaning, automatic disambiguation, and corpus linguistics.
Dónall Ó Baoill: Chief Irish Editor
Prof. Dónall Ó Baoill will hold the position of Chief Irish Editor for this phase of the project. He is Head of Celtic Language and Celtic Studies and Director of the School of Languages, Literatures and Arts at Queen’s University in Belfast. He is a noted linguist and has a wide knowledge of Irish dialects as well as having expertise in the history of the language and of its state as a living language in the Gaeltacht.
Valerie Grundy: Managing Editor
Dr Valerie Grundy has been working in bilingual lexicography for the last 15 years. She was Joint Chief Editor of the Oxford Hachette French Dictionary (1994) and has since managed projects in a number of European languages, including the Oxford Pocket Irish Dictionary (2000). She has also run postgraduate seminars on lexicography at the universities of Lyon and Lille.
Breandán Ó Cróinín: Senior Irish Editor
Dr Breandán Ó Cróinín was Editor of the Oxford Irish Minidictionary (1999) and the Oxford Pocket Irish Dictionary (2000). He has taught Irish language and literature in the Catholic University of Lublin, Poland and he is now a lecturer in the Department of Irish in Mary Immaculate College, University of Limerick.
Dr Eoghan Mac Aogáin
Dr Eoghan Mac Aogáin will be Senior Linguistic Advisor to the Project. He is a former director of ITÉ and has done major analytical work on the corpus of Irish that the Institute has put together.
Jo O’Donoghue: Corpus Development Officer
Jo O’Donoghue was born in Co. Kerry and educated in UCC and TCD. She has worked in publishing since 1988, most recently as publisher with Marino Books in Dublin. Her own publications include a critical study of the novelist Brian Moore.
